Had hours passed by already? The position of the sun was low in the sky. Lord Grey had stayed with me for the entire proceedings, from a distance. He felt my anguish, my sadness. It wasn’t an act. He was genuinely remorseful. The funeral was his gift. I could see that. Because of his generosity, I was able to send off my family in the right manner, with dignity. I understood those things. In another reality, he would have been my friend. But in this reality, he can only ever be my enemy.

I sat for so long, my legs were numb. My bad knee swelled up worse than before. Leaning forwards, I had to wait it out before I stepped gingerly towards the peacock. “Thank you for doing this. I’m also grateful for you saving me. Truly, I am.” I paused. I couldn’t falsely gain his trust and then strike from the shadows like a viper. That is a coward’s revenge. That’s not me. He deserved the truth.

“But hear me out. I would not have needed saving if you had never stepped foot on Azurian soil. Because of you, I have nothing. Maybe you don’t believe that you did, but you killed my mother, father, brother, and friend. That’s why you think you owe me. That’s why you are trying to help me. Don’t deny it. I have a truthful declaration of my own to make. I’m not a devious person. My heart is worn on my sleeve. I will not stab you in the back, slit your throat while you sleep, or poison your food and drink. It is not something I can do today, but one day, I will challenge you to a duel, out in the light of day, and I will kill you or be killed by you. I’m telling you this now because if you take me with you, that is the price. I will always crave justice for the wrongful deaths of my family. My aspect will not change. My persistence will not falter. For your own safety, you should leave me behind to face my fate.”

His smile dropped disappointedly like an early sunset as my words spilt out. He had never envisaged the depth of my hatred, and it disturbed him. Mulling over his next sentence, he looked deep in thought. My fists trembled in the enforced silence. All of a sudden, he relented. “Give me a chance. That is all I ask. Allow me to at least try to change your aspect. Let me find a reason for you to falter. If, by the time you are ready to kill me, and you still wish to do so…so be it.”

“My aspect will not change. I will not falter. Try all you like.”

“For the sake of fairness, I will give you only one chance to kill me. Choose it wisely.”

“I will.”

“Good. Then it is agreed. You will leave with me tomorrow. When we arrive in the Grey-Lands, I will enrol you in the military academy.
